    Six practices for rebuilding the design classroom from the ground up

    Teaching for a World in Transition

    What would a design course look like if it took its own values as seriously as its learning outcomes?

    Most syllabi don't ask that question. They list skills, deadlines, deliverables and leave the values embedded in all of it unspoken.

    But a classroom is never neutral. The materials handed out, the themes assigned, the way feedback is given: all of it carries a message about what matters, whether anyone names it or not. If design education is meant to prepare people for a world in genuine transformation, that message needs to be chosen on purpose rather than left to default.


    That's the starting point for the Futures Designed Educational Toolkit; a set of provocations, prompts, and tested classroom moves for anyone rethinking how a design course, workshop, or co-creation space actually runs. Six practices, each with a few starting points to try.


    Start With Values, Not Objectives

    Shifting from predefined outcomes to shared intentions changes what a course actually is, from content delivery to exchange. If equity, ecology, or care matter to a course, they need to be named at the start rather than implied.

    Begin every course or project with a values-mapping exercise. Invite learners to name the principles that matter to them: equity, ecology, community, care.

    Rewrite learning outcomes into questions or commitments. Instead of "students will demonstrate knowledge of...," try "students will explore ways to contribute to..."

    Build ground rules together with the group. Let the values people bring in become part of how the class actually operates.


    Teach Sustainability by Doing

    Sustainability doesn't land from a slide deck. It has to be felt, through material encounters, design dilemmas, and trade-offs that don't resolve neatly. Treat the classroom as a testing ground where failure teaches rather than penalizes.

    Run a "material biography" activity: have students trace the full life of one material they use, from extraction to disposal.

    Introduce design prompts that require reuse and limitation, "design using only discarded packaging from your home or school."

    Ask students to map a project's environmental impact both visually and emotionally. What does responsibility actually feel like here?


    Turn the Brief Into a Question

    A well-phrased question opens up more learning than a detailed assignment ever will. Prescribing the destination teaches compliance; leaving room to navigate teaches adaptability and inquiry, the tools that actually hold up under uncertainty.

    Use open-ended briefs with room for interpretation. Invite students to propose their own take on a central theme.

    Have small groups rewrite the project brief into their own research question.

    Use process journals where students track how their question changes over time, learning as exploration, not just execution.


    Use the World as Your Studio

    Real learning doesn't require four walls. The street, the market, the forest can all function as working laboratories, and when students engage with public space and local communities, their work picks up context it wouldn't get otherwise.

    Ask students to pick a space they already use often, a bus stop, a café, a market stall and explore how it could function differently as a learning site.

    Run walking workshops: take a lesson outside and build it around observation, mapping, or listening.

    Partner with local institutions: hold critiques in libraries, prototype in empty storefronts, exhibit in community centres.

     

    Focus on Systems, Not Just Skills

    No material, gesture, or platform exists in isolation; each sits inside wider social, ecological, and political systems. Teaching students to see those systems is what moves them past trend-chasing and into design they can actually stand behind.

    Use systems-mapping exercises to visually connect the people, processes, resources, and power involved in a project.

    Ask learners to identify the "unseen actors", the people or systems affected by their design who aren't in the room.

    Encourage projects that reveal problems, not just solve them, as a way of building tolerance for complexity.


    Make Space for Reflection and Repair

    Learning doesn't have to move fast to work. In a culture that rewards speed, building in pause is close to a radical act. Reflection on process, not just outcome, is where most of the actual learning tends to happen.

    Build in "slow critiques". Feedback that's paced, reflective, and respectful rather than rapid-fire.

    Replace grades with "learning moments": ask students to name one point where they changed their mind or shifted direction.

    Close each unit with a reflection circle, built around themes like growth, tension, repair, or possibility.


    None of these six practices are meant as a checklist to complete. They're starting points, things to try, break, and rebuild for whatever room you're actually teaching in. The point isn't to arrive at a finished method; it's to keep asking better questions about what a classroom is for.
